Walking on Wednesday
Remember the old saying, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” In that spirit, Walking on Wednesday has evolved. Throughout the winter a group of walkers met at the Parish Hall each Wednesday and walked together. But summer came and with it came heat and an exodus of walkers to the north. Not wanting to abandon our group we moved to the Internet at the beginning of June.
Through May our thirteen walkers and one dog had logged 406 miles. Our new challenge is to log the number of miles that it would take to travel from the Church of Transfiguration in Mesa to Mt. Tabor in Israel, the site of Jesus’s transfiguration, and return. That distance is 7,392 miles. Walking over 7,000 miles would seem like a daunting task except that now that we are on the Web we accept email submissions from anyone who wants to be a part of our group. The task has thus become doable for two important reasons. First, our group can expand infinitely. Second, many of our members are now relying on their Fitbit’s and are sending in their steps for the month. A month of steps adds up to far more miles than an hour of walking one day a week. In June we had seven walkers for a total of 1086 miles.
As you can see we are well on our way. We will travel on I-40 to New Jersey and from there we will fly to Jerusalem. From Jerusalem we will walk to Mt. Tabor. A map will be posted in the Parish Hall so people can follow our trek. Updates on our progress will also be posted on Facebook and here on the Web. Currently we are east of Oklahoma City. If we get more walkers we might have a shot at arriving at Mt. Tabor by the Feast of the Transfiguration on August 6th and be able to return to the Church of Transfiguration in Mesa in time to greet our winter visitors. By then the cooler weather should be here and we can once again walk together in fellowship.
